Visiting Maldon

Still with strong links to the river, the small trading port of Maldon lays at the head of the Blackwater Estuary and is charaterised by its old Thames sailing barges.

Maldon is one of the oldest towns in the area, once plundered by the Vikings who beat the Saxons at the Battle of Maldon in 991AD. This site today is at Park Drive and has been designated an English Heritage site of special historical interest.

Maldon grew as a town because of its strategic trading position and supplied many specialist trades and goods mainly to the London markets. Later, the development of the railway allowed goods and people to be transported by land rather than sea and the port at Maldon slowly became less commercial.

Today the High Street forms the town centre, with small roads and lanes running off it and the quaint shops and restaurants compliment the traditional style market held on Thursdays and Saturdays. There a lively community, with frequent events, large parks and a comprehensive leisure centre and there are two islands in the estuary one of which is Northey Island. Owned by the National Trust you can, with prior permission from the Warden, visit this wonderful haven of plants and wildlife.
